New insights into mantle metasomatism using in-situ isotopic analysis

چکیده
The development of the multi-collector ICP-MS has provided a wider range of isotopic systems (e.g. Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, Hf, Tl) that can used to place constraints on the timing of mantle metasomatism and better characterize metasomatic processes. Associated with the application of these isotopic systems has been the parallel development of in-situ isotope analysis using a laser ablation microprobe attached to the mass spectrometer. The in-situ capabilities allow for the first time the investigation of the scale of isotopic variation due to metasomatism and raises questions over the validity of whole-rock measurments. In-situ analysis also allows the isotopic data to be interpreted within a microstructural context and in the framework of geochemical data from other microanalytical techniques.

Large-scale mantle metasomatism: a Re^Os perspective
There is a debate on the behavior of Re and Os during mantle metasomatism. Some argue that the mantle can acquire high 187Os/188Os (0.15 to s 1.0) either directly from metasomatic events or by the growth of 187Os from 187Re over time. However, any suggestions of subduction-related Os metasomatism producing whole-scale elevation of the mantle to 187Os/188Os values greater than 0.15 need to be su...
متن کاملInsights into Li and Li isotope cycling and sub-arc metasomatism from veined mantle xenoliths, Kamchatka
Harzburgitic xenoliths cut by pyroxenite veins from Avachinsky volcano, Kamchatka, are derived from the sub-arc mantle and record element transfer from the slab to the arc. Olivine and orthopyroxene in the harzburgites have Li isotopic compositions (dLi = ?2.8 to ?5.6) comparable to estimates of the upper mantle (dLi * ?4 ± 2). The pyroxenite veins, which represent modal metasomatism and may th...

Article history: Received 29 March 2017 Accepted 27 July 2017 Available online 04 August 2017 Subduction and collision are the key processes triggering geochemical refertilization of the lithospheric mantle beneath cratons. However, the way that the subducted plate influences the cratonic lithospheric mantle remains unclear. Here, in-situ major and trace-element and Sr isotopic compositions of ...
متن کاملBehaviour of Li and its isotopes during metasomatism of French Massif central lherzolites
Li behaviour and distribution in the mantle were investigated by ion microprobe in situ measurements on co-existing olivine (ol), orthopyroxene (opx), clinopyroxene (cpx) and amphibole (amp) in xenoliths from the French Massif Central. The fertile spinel lherzolites of this study record increasing degrees of mantle metasomatism, from unmetasomatised anhydrous samples through cryptically metasom...
